The Sober-N virus is responsible for nearly 20 percent of all virus reports currently. It dwarfs the virus currently in second place — a version of the Netsky worm — which represents just over 6 percent of all virus reports and accounts for just 0.4 percent of all e-mail traffic.
Back in the good old days of computer viruses, malicious hackers wrote them for notoriety alone. Getting some code to run and then proliferate across the Internet still held some cachet in the online community.
Those days are gone, according to Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant with security firm Sophos .
Now, its all about money, he said. Were seeing viruses used increasingly by criminal gangs looking for real financial gain.
