Shares of Siebel Systems jumped 5.2 percent Friday amid renewed speculation that the struggling San Mateo software maker is negotiating a takeover by Oracle.
The two companies have met in recent weeks, people familiar with the situation said. Whether a deal will be sealed, though, is not known.Siebel, once a Wall Street star, has fallen on tough times in the fiercely competitive business-software market. Oracle, meanwhile, has been on the prowl for companies to acquire as it strives to expand its software empire.
Spokesmen for both companies would not comment on the rumors.
