One of the hottest new handhelds on the market doesnt play music, make phone calls or connect to the Internet.

But it has a few killer features going for it. For one, it doesnt use batteries and never needs to be plugged in. And at about $3, you cant beat the price.

The Hipster PDA is actually a stack of ordinary index cards, bound together with a 10-cent office clip. What it lacks in pizzazz, fans say, it more than makes up for in utility. After all, the cards can hold everything from to-do lists to address information.

San Francisco consultant Merlin Mann came up with the idea last year, after he grew tired of lugging around his Palm V. Judging from the traffic on his Web site, which explains how to make ones own Hipster, the product has struck a nerve.
